At the same time, Riverfront Drive’s reconstruction enhanced the corridor’s pedestrian environment and aesthetics. Part of the enhancement was to update utilities in the area, including the storm drainage system. HP Storm pipe and Nyloplast drain basins were the perfect choice for the storm drainage system as the products provide watertight connections for right-of-way installations, time savings and ease of installation.
Mankato’s preferred curb and gutter inlet structures are Nyloplast basins, which were specified for stormwater capture on the project. Mankato has depicted Nyloplast basins as their standard catch basin within their engineering standards manual for over 10 years. The Nyloplast basins are preferred by Mankato’s Engineering and Public Works staff due to the benefits of the PVC structure.
To capture stormwater on Riverfront Drive, 88 24” and one 30” Nyloplast drain basins were required. Once captured the stormwater was conveyed using 2,500’ of HP Storm pipe in diameters from 12”-24”. HP Storm was approved by the City of Mankato in 2023 and added to the city’s specifications. Therefore, HP Storm, a polypropylene pipe, and RCP were available bid options. The contractor, Dirt Merchant, Inc., chose HP Storm for its high performance, cost effectiveness and time savings.
HP Storm polypropylene pipe provides superior pipe stiffness and a premium joint performance for a longer service life. The smooth interior wall offers additional strength and high flow capacity. HP Storm pipe meets or exceeds the standards specified in ASTM F2881 and AASHTO M330, in addition to the City Engineers Association of Minnesota (CEAM). The extended bell and spigot meets ASTM D3212.
Polypropylene is an inert material and is resistant to the effects of chemicals, abrasion, hot soils and effluent. The lightweight product is easy to deliver and is readily available in convenient locations across North America to service local projects.
Nyloplast drain basins are custom built for each application. Nyloplast products are more durable and corrosion resistant than precast basins and combine a rugged PVC structure with ductile iron grates. The basins can be easily adjusted in the field to meet the final grade.
