The stormwater drainage and storage system, which is made from N-12 pipe, collects water and irrigates the park setting, where over 400 trees cover the area that was the basement of the buildings destroyed on Sept. 11, 2001.
Perforated N-12 pipe, wrapped in a geotextile fabric to block fines and sands, gathers water into the system and the water flows into sumps. The water is then re-used for the irrigation. Due to its design, N-12 produces a smaller environmental impact than other pipe materials, such as corrugated metal or reinforced concrete pipe. This allowed the Memorial Plaza to be certified through the USGBC LEED program.
