When the Wilkes-Barre Area High School Wolfpack took the field for the 2025 baseball season, they were playing on a brand new synthetic turf field.

PRODUCTS USED

Synthetic fields have become the norm for schools in the northeast because early spring weather inhibits practices and games on natural turf.

The Wolfpacks’ field and adjacent tennis courts were built at the high school, which opened in August 2021, after the consolidation of James M. Coughlin High School, G.A.R. Memorial Junior/Senior High School and Elmer L. Meyers Junior/Senior High Schools. The school is built on a 77-acre former mining site and was partially funded by an industrial site re-use grant from Pennsylvania, a leader in responsible development of brownfield sites.

When developing the baseball field and tennis courts, the engineer, ELA Group, Inc., chose to use Nyloplast drain basins to capture stormwater and N-12 dual wall HDPE pipe to convey water to the city’s storm sewer system. The engineer and contractor, Keystone Sports Construction, had both worked with Nyloplast and N-12 previously.

In addition to rapidly draining the ball field and tennis area, the Nyloplast basins prevent stormwater from reaching an adjacent parking lot and driveway. N-12 main trunk lines run through the ball field, while perforated N-12 pipe surrounds the tennis courts. N-12 was chosen for ease of installation in green space applications and the recycled product in Mega Green pipe promotes sustainable construction materials

Due to the high-profile and time-sensitive nature of the project, ADS representatives visited the site frequently during installation to coordinate delivery and production with the site contractor. Nyloplast drain basins were custom built for the project as they are for each application.

Nyloplast products are more durable and corrosion resistant than precast basins and combine a rugged PVC structure with ductile iron grates. The basins can be easily adjusted in the field to meet the final grade. The structures are shipped with rubber gaskets to ensure a watertight connection.

N-12 dual wall pipe has a corrugated exterior and smooth interior wall that provide exceptional strength and hydraulics. The inert HDPE material is resistant to the effects of chemicals, abrasions and hot soils. N-12 is available in 4”-60” (100-1500 mm) diameters and in 20’ (6 m) lengths. The inline bell design allows for pipe ends to be pushed together for easy installation. The joint requires only a lubricant during installation which leads to faster installation times.
