This document is the Open Bottom Stream & Wetland Crossing Structure StormTech Brochure. StormTech Chambers offer a more economical and ecological solution for streams and wetland crossing structures. Utilizing open bottomed chambers is a cost-effective alternative to closed bottom structures. The open bottom allows for less disruption to the natural substrates in the streambed and allows for unimpeded stream flow that eliminates corrosive effects on water quality.
StormTech Chambers are ideal for low velocity waterways. The large interior bottom widths maintains streambed continuity and allows for easy placement of the correct bedding materials for the crossings hydraulic design.
Maintaining the existing streambed promotes stream and wetland continuity, normalizes transport and preserves the natural flow regime. By creating a wide open and well illuminated crossing, wildlife are able to pass underneath roadways.
Advantages of open bottom stream crossing are stream and wetland continuity, unimpeded flow, normalizes stream transport, minimizes habitat fragmentation, ideal for aquatic and amphibian passing, eliminates embedded culvert inlet and reduces likelihood of plunging jet scour hole formation. Photos of the chamber system are provided.
